“Sasampalin kita!”

The threat of sampal seems to be an annual ritual for our outgoing president.

In 2018, he threatened to slap Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña.

He bookended 2019 by doing the same to Daraga Mayor Carlwyn Baldo in January and a human rights advocate in November. And of course, who could forget his plan to sampal the veerus?

Google did not yield any results of anyone being on the receiving end in 2021 but near the end of his six-year term this year, Tatay trained his tirades towards Satan. Yes, Satan himself as he addressed the supporters of a senatorial candidate. The voters might look for Satan’s name in the ballot for all the time Tatay spent talking about him.

“Kung mamatay ako, dalhin ko na lang kayo sa… At ‘wag kayong matakot mamatay, ako ang bahala sa inyo.”

Tatay is half-right. There is no need to fear death which has lost its sting and victory when Jesus rose from the dead (1 Cor. 15:55) so hindi si Tatay ang bahala sa atin. It is Jesus.

“Sabagay iilan lang dito ang magpunta sa langit, karamihan dito impiyerno ‘yan…”

Tatay speaks the truth when he says how only a few will go to heaven. Of course, he wasn’t the first to say that. Jesus said how the gate to heaven is narrow and only a few will enter it. (Mt. 7:13-14)

For somebody who has slandered God in public and made fun of the teachings of the Bible, he has fully grasped its message which shows that he has been exposed to the gospel but the god of this age has blinded his mind (2 Cor. 4:4).

“Huwag kayong matakot, hihintayin ko kayo doon.”

There will be no waiting party, Tatay. Souls will be weeping, with teeth gnashing (Mt. 13:50). If you’re in the ER because your oxygen level is in the low 70s, would you be in the reception party of others being wheeled in?

“Huwag kayong matakot kay Satanas kasi pagdating ninyo pakitaan ko kayo ng exhibition.”

It is true there is no need to fear a defeated enemy but it doesn’t mean we must be cavalier. Satan is still prowling around like a roaring lion, as he has not received his punishment. It’s like having a convicted serial killer walking around freely in your neighborhood. We would still double- and triple-lock our doors.

“Pupuntahan ko ‘yan si Satanas sa trono niya at sampalin ko ‘yang p***** i** ka.”

Hell is not like our bilibid where someone may receive life but if he’s powerful enough, he will be its boss. Satan is not the ruler of hell. He is not the king of hades. Hell will be his prison. He, like any soul condemned to it, will suffer for eternity.

“Umalis ka na diyan kay kung hindi, putulin ko ‘yang buntot mo gawain kong bulalo ‘yang p***** i** Tumabi ka na. Dumating na ang Presidente ng Pilipinas na papalit sa iyo.”

Satan is not somebody in a red suit with a tail and a pitchfork. Somebody that heinous and ugly will not attract millions of souls. Like the villains in the movies and TV shows today, he is very appealing, charismatic, and attractive. He is even described in Scriptures as “perfect in beauty” (Eze. 28:12-17).

All these quotes were lifted from the article, entitled “Duterte lightens up campaign rally, tells audience: 'I'll see you all in hell, I'll dethrone Satan'.”

The headline is unfortunate theologically speaking. There is nothing light about spending eternity in the darkest place that is beyond our imagination. It is dark because God who is the light of the world is absent (2 Thess. 1:9). It is no laughing matter as the soul will forever be alone in anguish, suffering in fire and darkness, with the remembrance of a life wasted (Luke 16:19-31). As children of light, let us shine the path to the Way to people around us and preach the Truth so they, including Tatay, may spend eternity with Life.
