Wake up before we go-go (Musings in the time of COVID-19)

Now listen to me, you that say, “Today or tomorrow we will travel to a certain city, where we will stay a year and go into business and make a lot of money.” You don't even know what your life tomorrow will be! You are like a puff of smoke, which appears for a moment and then disappears. What you should say is this: “If the Lord is willing, we will live and do this or that.” James 4:13-15 (GNT)

For Bible-believing Christians, this is a very familiar passage that warns against making plans without acknowledging the Lord and His sovereignty. Perhaps in the past, we have given it a perfunctory nod, "yes, yes," but who would have ever imagined that ALL our laid-out plans will become best-laid in this magnitude? Not only did it render our March and April calendar moot, but we have found our lives to be at so much risk just stepping out of our house or being near someone, even our loved one. A droplet can make us "a puff of smoke."

God is not against us making plans but He must be included which is why we need to prefix them with, "God willing" for nothing ever happens apart from His sovereignty. Is the virus His wake-up call? There have been a lot of talk about that but I think the question we need to be asking is, “Are we waking up?”
