The Master and the masters

The Master and the masters

Throughout AD history, the Bible and its stories have been presented in various formats outside of oral storytelling to capture the interest and perhaps the imagination of both the presenter and the intended audience. We have movies, musicals, comic books, street festivals, cartoon shows, radio shows, etc. but none probably longer in existence than visual art. In fact, its influence is so widespread that even a person who may claim to have no interest in art and could not be bothered by it, is not spared from its reach. Ask that person what Jesus looks like and chances are, his depiction comes from the images in paintings. Even modern man's visual media like the movies, graphic novels, cartoon programs, etc. show how pervasive biblical art has been in our lives as we can trace their interpretation back to the masters. This column lists (not comprehensively and exhaustively of course) those biblical works of art but please note that these are seldom historically accurate as most deify the mortals, romanticize the heroes, and dress up the characters according to their milieu. Biblical art rose from the desire of the church particularly the Catholic church to teach the illiterate masses but accuracy wasn't part of the criteria. The paintings were done for art's sake much like the true-to-life movies we have that are mostly true to the imagination of the writers.

There were other factors that contributed to the proliferation of biblical art. The church had a new building or cathedral and it needed something to fill up the walls while some artists painted biblical themes just because they were the norm.

Regardless of reason, it may not matter much as we can still use them today especially to those outside of our culture and language zones as well as to those who might be more drawn to visuals than texts that are longer than 280 characters. They can also be used to jumpstart a conversation about the Bible by taking the art chat route.

The works are listed according to episodes. And as much as I would have liked to show images of the paintings, I can only list them by name to avoid any copyright infringement. Anyway, you can just Google them. As this site is not an academic pursuit on the study of the arts, please make room for margin of error. Thanks.

Thanks.
