THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO A PRO

Somebody PMd me about a challenge making the rounds in the Pinoy Christian social media landscape.

***** me to post this: Pwde kaya may challenge sa mga Christian na sumusuporta kay duterte na mag-post ng ganito: I AM A CHRISTIAN AND I SUPPORT A PRESIDENT WHO CURSES GOD, ENJOY RAPE JOKES, ADULTERER, AND IS A SELF-CONFESSED MURDERER, BECAUSE I LOVE JESUS! PRAISE THE LORD!!! If you all can do this, winner na kayo! ----------

Yeah I posted this coz I believe on this government. Duterte might be unrighteous but so as David an adulterer and murderer, take note David did this during his reign not before or after. But did God disqualify him to rule? In the very womb of Batsheba (who David commit adultery with) the wisest king borned: SOLOMON

Christians: stop being hypocrite, we also got flaws let us not cast the stone if we are also unrighteous. Well in fact our righteousness are like filthy rugs in God's sight, so we can not boast about it.

Normally, I do not bother with such things but I just couldn’t shake this one off. Bad grammar and spelling aside, I couldn’t let a misrepresentation of the Word slide and mislead both believers and non-believers. Don’t worry, my dear pro friends, I am not here to persuade you to my side of the political fence because whom you choose to support is your democratic right. But being both Christians, we must agree that the Word must never be used to suit one’s political leanings especially a bad exegesis.

The post-er claims that David is an adulterer and a murderer. Correction: He was an adulterer and a murderer who confessed (Psalm 51) which is why to this day, he is known as the man after God’s own heart.

“But did God disqualify him to rule?” No, because he repented as soon as he was confronted. He did not go on to brag about it and threaten Nathan’s life or had friends file cases against him. Let us also remember that David did not molest anyone nor did he make rape jokes.

Yes, Solomon, the wisest king was “borned,” but the baby that was conceived from the fatal affair died (2 Sam. 12:15-17). Solomon was born after “Batsheba” became his wife. And we never read David justifying breaking two of the Ten Commandments. We never read his supporters justifying it with the Torah or “tao lang siya.” And Solomon was not the wisest king but the wisest man. He wasn’t wise because he served God half-heartedly (1 Kings 11:4) disregarding his own proverb, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” (Pro. 9:10a, NIV).

And then we come to the only thing I am in agreement with---“Christians: stop being hypocrite (sic).” The post-er continues, “We also got flaws let us not cast the stone if (sic) we are also unrighteous.” Yes, we all have flaws. We all still sin which is why we need to cleanse regularly and not brag about them nor defend them. And Jesus did not say “let us not cast the stone” but cast not the “first” stone (John 8:7). This implies that we are not to be in a hurry to be pointing fingers. Conversely, we are not forbidden to rebuke an erring brother or sister in love and in truth for as long as our motive is pure and sincere.

“Well in fact our righteousness are like filthy rugs in God's sight, so we can not boast about it.” Other than spellcheck, relevance is likewise needed but since the post-er brought it up, the connection that I can see here is that as much as we cannot boast of our righteousness, we are not to condone the boasting of unrighteousness and back them up with arguments from the Bible especially when our understanding is weak.

If we must use the Word to justify our stance---and we should----we must do so gingerly. We must not let it conform to what we want it to say to make us feel good about our position. The world is observing and keeping “resibo” but more importantly, we are accountable to the Word Himself.
