SLIPPERY FEET (Musings in the time of COVID-19)

The Internet in this side of the globe exploded in indignant outrage when they learned of the irresponsible behavior of a senator violating his self-quarantine and endangering the people especially the collapsing, exhausted and dwindling frontliners he crossed paths with at S&R and Makati Medical Center. His fellow condominium tenants are also up in arms in social media how they were not informed of his condition. His subsequent actions cemented his designation as the most despised person in the country when he at first denied, dodged questions and then came up with excuses before finally apologizing. And if this weren’t maddening enough, the Department of Justice absolves him citing “compassion” just a few hours later with Malacanang and the Department of Health (DOH) following suit. (A day later, the DOH stands down.)

In contrast, curfew violators are locked in dog cages and made to sit under the heat of the noonday sun.

All this came days after it was found out that government officials were receiving preferential treatment to get tested even if they had not exhibited any signs and ahead of those who were symptomatic. Some were even tested twice while some got their results the following day in contrast to the public they have sworn to serve, who had to wait for days, and die while waiting. One who got tested was not even a current official, not to mention a convicted criminal but still roaming free because the state feels sorry for her old age. It is not like our prison does not have senior citizens. And it is not like we have an unlimited supply of test kits. As of this writing, the country only has 4,500 test kits for its 108M population.

For the rest of us who are law-abiding citizens, where do we begin?

With Psalms 37 & 73.

Go and read them now. Go. Now. Seriously. Then come back.

Are you done with Psalms 37 & 73?

Then we’re done. There’s nothing else I can add to the comfort the psalms give their blessed readers. Stay safe!
