KAYA KAYA

A vlogger has been appearing in the news lately for allegedly being insensitive with her toxic positivity.

“Bakit may sad dahil back to work na? Diba dapat masaya ka kasi may chance ka na pagandahin buhay mo at ng pamilya? Trip ko pa nga may work ng January 1 dahil superstition ko may work ako buong taon pag ganun. Dapat grateful kasi may work,” she posted.

In a way, she is right. It’s about mindset but where our mind should be set in, is the big question. If it’s a vague “the universe is rooting for you” or “just believe in yourself” mantra, hopelessness can easily creep in. How can I sustain myself when I am drowning? How can the universe be rooting for me---and my enemy at the same time?

I am unfamiliar with the vlogger so I don’t know where her positive mindset is coming from but I do know God who tells us to give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (I Thess. 5:17-18, ESV)

I hope you noticed it says to “give thanks IN all circumstances,” and not “FOR all circumstances.” God is not insensitive or suffering from toxic positivity in His heavenly privileges. (I blogged about that the last time.)

“We know that God works together all things for good to those loving God, to those being called according to His purpose.” (Rom. 8:28, BLB).

If we are to have a positive mindset, it is because our mind is set in God (Col. 3:2, Phil. 2:2). It’s the only mindset that will sustain us through tough times because we know there’s a reason for our circumstances that will bring glory to God our Father (PS. 86:2, 115:1). As His children, His glory is our only reason and purpose in life.

Not only is God the reason, but He is the one sustaining us. Siya na ang dahilan kung bakit kakayanin natin, Siya pa ang nagbibigay ng lakas para kayanin natin. But wait, there’s more!

Yes, it’s hard. This is why Jesus asked us to cast our burdens upon Him (Mt. 11:28). Siya na ang dahilan kung bakit kakayanin natin, Siya pa ang nagbibigay ng lakas para kayanin natin, tapos Siya pa ang magdadala.

Let Him carry our burdens so we can find rest in God during the most trying of times that threaten to wrest our hope from us. This is “the will of God in Christ Jesus for” who love Him so it’s a commandment.

As His followers, we must obey. Knowing that we are being obedient to the Father adds strength to our hope. Grace upon grace, hope upon hope, strength upon strength, those are what God promises to us when we give thanks in all toxic circumstances.
