I SWEAR BY THE GOAT

The first woman NASA official was sworn in as a director but the news zeroed in on her use of Carl Sagan’s book instead of the Bible. The article later mentions that it is not unprecedented but the way the headline was worded, “New Nasa director swears oath on Carl Sagan’s ‘Pale Blue Dot’ instead of Bible,” you would think it was.

I didn’t know people could choose what or whom to swear on in an official capacity. It got me into thinking that if that’s the case, the object must be greater than ourselves and is acknowledged as such by the office and the witnesses. Perhaps the new director perceived Sagan as greater or even the greatest scientist but being human, he was as flawed as she is. And he’s dead.

When God was in the midst of making a promise to His friend Abraham, (yes, that’s in the Bible; it’s in Jas 2:23) He swore by Himself because “He could swear by no one greater,” (Heb. 6:13 NKJV, cf. Gen. 22:16-17a).

God did it again in Isa. 45:23, “I will make a promise by my own power, and my promise is true; what I say will not be changed.” (CEV) And this is why God is the GOAT.

  • His power is the greatest (Ps. 150:2).
  • He has never broken His promises (1 Cor. 1:9).
  • His Word stands forever (Isa. 40:8).
  • He is perfect (Mt. 5:48).
  • He does not change (Mal. 3:6).
  • And He was alive even before time began (Gen. 1:1) and lives forevermore (Rev. 15:7).

I swear, saan ka pa?
