HOTDOG LIPS

Have you ever wondered why some women---and men---overfill their lips to the point they have hotdog lips and still think it looks attractive?

According to a YouTube video featuring two cosmetic surgeons, these people suffer from body dysmorphic order (BDD) where they feel terrible about how they look (even if they look great or even greater than most people) so when they get a procedure, they get a high from the change in their appearance, as well as from getting compliments (sincere or not). But the high doesn’t last long so down the valley they slide. They miss the high and go under the knife chasing it, and up and down they go in the emotional roller coaster.

But why do doctors keep operating on them? Surely, they can see it’s doing their patients harm, violating their Hippocratic Oath. The cosmetic surgeons said these doctors suffer from the Dunning-Kruger Effect where they overestimate their skills. They see good results and ego takes over, thinking they’re doing great. What they don’t realize is that they are at the “peak of Mount Stupidity.”

But enabling doctors are not always stupid. Some also suffer from BDD where they can’t see what’s wrong and pass it on to their patients who in turn, feel validated.

Pastors and church leaders can also suffer from BDD of the spiritual kind by teaching another gospel like saying how abortion is a “moral Christian imperative” and “it's OK to be LGBT... being gay is not bad." It smacks of the Dunning-Kruger Effect showing how they have not been presenting themselves “to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, RIGHTLY HANDLING THE WORD OF TRUTH.” (2 Tim. 2:15 ESV) To such leaders, Jesus said in Luke 17:2, “It would be better for (them) if a millstone were hung around (their) neck and (they) were cast into the sea than that (they) should cause one of these little ones to sin.”

Who wants to drown? Raise your hands.

My point exactly. Yet Jesus said it’s more desirable than to mislead the “little ones to sin.” Instead of discouraging them from sinning, it is the pastors and church leaders who are actually egging them on, with a misquoted verse or two. God is serious when it comes to handling His Word that He guarantees “swift destruction” to those with “destructive heresies.” (2 Peter 2:1-2 CSB)

But before we start pointing a finger at others, let us watch what we teach. Let us not “overfill” people who listen to us, validating their spiritual BDD. Let us make sure that we are teaching the Bible, not our opinion, not our emotional persuasion, and not what society dictates. More importantly, if someone comes to correct us, let us not be defensive but be humble to accept rebuke before we find ourselves jumping from the peak of Mount Stupidity with a millstone around our necks, rather than face God’s wrath for misleading the souls He came to save.
