EGR

If you’ve been a Christian for at least three years now, chances are, you’ve probably heard of “EGR.” The first time I heard of it was a few years ago when a good friend said she needed “EGR.” As I was not familiar with the acronym, I asked what it stood for.

“Extra grace required,” she answered.

“But we don’t need extra grace,” I said. “God’s grace is sufficient.”

She then explained that EGR pertains to dealing with difficult people. I said 2 Corinthians 12:9 still applies. And then just last Sunday, I heard a pastor talking about EGR.

God’s grace is sufficient in all circumstances. When we pray for extra grace, we’re saying that God doesn’t know how much we need making Him like us---limited in knowledge. By praying for such, we imply that we know better than God by asking for something beyond that He has deemed sufficient.

I am reminded of that ice cream commercial asking us, “Hanggang saan aabot ang P20 mo?” At first, we may think, “Not that far” but the ad showed how their product was enough for our budget for that happiness quotient.

When we find ourselves in “extra grace required” moments, let us remember that we already have the “Everyday Grace Requirement.” That’s the only EGR we would need to get through difficult situations and deal with obnoxious people who, for all we know, see us as such as well.
